Last month, FIRST 5125 Hawks on the Horizon created our first Diversity Plan. This is one the most fundamental documents you can have to run an organized team.
Within the Diversity Plan, includes many things, like: how we are able to create an equal opportunity to thrive as leaders, giving everybody a chance to pursue what they are interested in, how we are able to create such a safe environment for our team. Creating an equal and safe environment is important for FIRST 5125 Hawks on the Horizon because we are able to make sure we can get everybody to their best potential. Not only will this play a factor in our team, but in our community. Giving power to those who normally do not have any power, can change the way we run this society. We will also be able to create future leaders, who can reinvent the wheel based on their culture.
How can we improve our diversity? For starters, we will like to try to mentor other teams that do not have the chance the most other FIRST teams usually have. We are planning to run an all girl FTC Off-Season. This can create a larger gender diversity in the already men dominated field. We will like to give chances to children in our community to drive the robot, which is predominantly Hispanic.
What does that mean for other FIRST Teams? Well, you should start to influence others of other genders and races to get interested in the field of STEM. Whether this means creating an all girl event, creating teams in underrepresented populations, or giving chances to all, YOU can create diversity.
