Welcome to the 2018 FIRST Power Up kickoff everyone! On Saturday, January 6th, 2018, Hawks On The Horizon has set foot in Illinois Institute of Technology’s campus to watch the livestream kickoff off the 2018 season. There were 38 teams in total with us there, such as PWNAGE, X-Machina, and Wolfbyte. A shoutout was made for PWNAGE who helped build the field components for us to test out! Dan Green, Gerald Smith, Professor Spenko and Segre came to the kickoff to publicly speak about FIRST’s impact with students in their influence of jobs with STEM fields that they would take in college. Teams were presented with the kit of parts that was distributed to all teams that came to the kickoff and they also had the option for an in depth overview of the rules in the manual that Dan Green went over.
Hawks On The Horizon went hard to work immediately after we came back to school. We watched the FIRST Power Up game animation in depth and asked questions that the video did not answer. With those questions, we split up into groups to help answer those questions by looking through the game manual. The next day, we came up with ideas of what our robot design would be. Yet again, we split up into groups for our team to come up with different ideas of what tasks our robot would perform in the field. After several hours of designing, we came up with one by combining two different ideas onto one robot design. To this day, we are still working on building the robot, then later on, test our robot to see if any changes need to be made.
