Many people in Chicago go to sleep without food, some kids don't know when they will get their next meal. A large majority of students only eat when they get lunch at school. 20% of Chicagoans struggle with food insecurity.
When I heard this I personally wanted to do something to help. I didn't know where to start I thought “I’m only a high school student. What could I do?” That’s when I found out about the Greater Chicago Food Depository. We as a class went to their office and help them unpack and then repackage sweet potatoes. We did this for most of the morning and it was a great experience and it felt good to help others. Our next move is to expand outside of the classroom and make this a community wide project. We want more people involved on a deeper level. We plan to be the bridge between the community and the GCFD.
