Earlier in the year, I began to work on a project I have always wanted to do. In September of 2017, Hurricane Maria struck the island of Puerto Rico and neighboring countries like Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands. Hurricane Maria was the worst storm to hit Puerto Rico in over 80 years, causing $94 billion dollars in damage. I have always had a strong desire and passion to help people from different parts of the world and at this time, there were many people who needed (and still need) our help. I wanted to do something about this problem and looked for ways our robotics team can help.
As we entered 2018, I began researching different types of volunteer organizations our robotics team can potentially work with to help give back to Puerto Rico and stumbled upon an organization named All Hands and Hearts. After weeks of contact with this organization, we were not able join them during the summer because we did not have enough funding to send a group of us.
Fast forward to now, I have reopened this project in hopes that we will have another shot in getting to volunteer in Puerto Rico or another area that still needs help. Our goal is to help rebuild the homes of families and schools but at the same time getting a chance to show that FIRST is more than just building robots, It is about helping those in need. For teams that are interested in looking to help people in need or helping with the construction and rebuilding of homes and schools, look out for organizations like All Hands and Hearts and reach out!
