This Saturday, January 6th, our team attended kickoff, an event that reveals the new FIRST FRC season of the year, the game field, and the challenge. Deep Space, the challenge this year, involves earning points by placing these disc like panels onto a rocket (hatch panels) and cargo ship, placing/throwing balls (cargo) also into the rocket and cargo ship, and more! The following day, our team sat in a room brainstorming ideas on the design of the our new robot and what will the robot be able to accomplish in the field during matches. We decided that the priorities for our new robot would be the following:
Get on and off this platform called “Level 2”
Intake/Carry/Place Hatch Panel on “Low”
Intake/Carry/Place Cargo in Ship/Low Port.
With the “Level 2” platform, we have to make sure our robot is able to climb up there without any difficulty. My role on the team is directing the Drivetrain subteam, where our main focus is building the chassis. This needs to get done first before the other technical subteams get to mount on their work. This week, the Drivetrain subteam will be testing out 8 inch wheels on our Steamworks robot, Steamed Noodles, and see if that is enough to climb over that level 2 platform. If that is not the case, we will have to figure out how to make a slanted cut on the front of the robot so that it can be easier to roll onto the platform, kind of like an army tank!
Once we figure this situation out, the Drivetrain subteam will begin assembling the chassis for our new robot.
