The situation we are facing today is nothing like the modern world has seen before. Global communities are trying their best to solve this rapidly grown, dangerous, and complex problem surrounding the spread of COVID-19. Governments, individuals, and companies alike are trying to keep people safe to contain the spread, by social distancing and when possible just staying at home- which is not easy especially for those who have to keep working. We hope that you stay safe by following the five prevention steps. Despite these hard times, we’re not planning to take a long break. We live in an age where plenty of resources are available at the touch of a button. We are constantly thinking about ways to encourage students to take the initiative to get work done.
DO THE FIVE
1. HANDS Wash them often
2. ELBOW Cough into it
3. FACE Don’t touch it
4. SPACE Keep safe distance
5. HOME Stay if you can
One of the ways we have picked up is by setting video chats designed to have people around for company or help. We set these video chats using Google Hangouts as many times as we can throughout the week, and invite everyone on our Slack channel to join in if they are interested. We believe if we have an outlet where we can all talk to each other, we would all participate in helping each other out and push each other to get work done, whether school work, robotics, or other individual projects.
We have also set up certain sub team meetings to take place during this break. Sub teams that are able to work remotely are encouraged to get work done over the period. Directors can schedule the meeting(s) for the week and add a Google Hangouts link that everyone participating can join. During one Control Systems meeting, our team was able to get five different versions of autonomous code ready to test and a way to select different autonomous code. We hope to accomplish more over the next two weeks.
While we like working, we set times to play online games (League of Legends or Minecraft) among the team to not only hang out but to also bring us closer and comfort one another. Any form of communication among team members or friends, whether through video games or sharing memes, is vital to staying healthy. So torture each other by not saving your friend’s villager from a tarantula or wasps on the island, or play a game where all you can do is feed because your skills definitely need to improve despite being at level 25. How did you even get to level 25? Maybe even pick up your phone and call your mentor just to bother them. The worst thing they could do is not pick up. At that point, just fill their voicemail box. Enjoy this time to be with family and friends.
We only hope the situation we face with COVID-19 gets better. During these times, we need to appreciate the small things in life. By following prevention steps and paying attention to the news and individuals among us, we can take small steps to ensure that more people don’t get infected and stay safe.
