As a FIRST student I can say it is fun attending kick off and being able to watch the game live for the first time with all my teammates. Now that this past season has been canceled and Infinite Recharge is going to be replayed next year I thought I would leave a few thoughts on that.
I think that Infinite Recharge being replayed will bring a lot of changes with it. It will change how teams build robots. Since teams already have robots from the past season there will be more competitive robots at events. Teams will have all off season to build robots as opposed to the 6 to 8 weeks during build season. This will allow for teams that struggled to build robots during build season to take this off season to test more ideas out and have a top tier bot, hopefully. At these events the rankings will be more diverse and you don't know who will be in the finals since there will be so many good teams. A second change is that since there is more time with the competition robot there will be more time to practice driving which will allow for better drivers come competition time.
Although there are so many good things about Infinite Recharge being replayed it takes away a big thing from FRC, and that is Kick Off. Since teams will know the challenge already there is no real need to have a big Kick Off event. That sucks in a way because I remember being so excited and nervous about the kick off because I didn't know what to expect. I remember talking with team mates during kick off and coming up with ideas as a team for that year's robot. That idea of getting a new challenge and having to build a robot in 6 weeks is a staple in FRC. With that gone new students will not be able to get that experience. While there will be subtle changes to the game, it will not be the same as experiencing a new game.
My final thought on replaying Infinite Recharge is that it's a good thing overall. Kick Off will not be the same but the competitions will be really exciting to watch. Teams should take this time to build the best robot they can. Take advantage of this and make the best of it. Teams should test more ideas out and try to build robots that can either do every single task well or focus on one task and be really proficient at it. Teams should also build a hanger for end game as it helps the alliance score and has a ranking point involved with it.
